Insurance Coverages
 

 1. Will home owners insurance cover water damage as a result of a storm or hurricane?
     A: No. Hurricane coverage has been eliminated from standard home owner's policies.
         To insure your home  against floods you will have to purchase additional flood insurance.
 2. Who qualifies for flood insurance?
     A: Homes, condos, apartments, renters and business structures are eligible.
 3. Will flood insurance cover sewer backup?
     A: In most cases, the backup and the damage must be related to flooding and all general conditions of flooding are  met in your local area.
 4. What is covered and not covered by flood insurance?
     A: Direct physical losses caused by floods are covered. Losses resulting from flood-related erosion are also covered if caused by abnormally high waves or  currents of water activity, severe storm,flash flood or abnormal tidal surge.
       Your basement structure, essential equipment and other basic     items normally located in a basement are covered; however personal belongings  stored in a basement, such as furniture, are not covered.
 5. Does my NFIP Policy cover mold or mildew?
     A: Damage from mold or mildew arising from the after effects of a covered flood is covered. However, each case is evaluated on an individual basis.
         Mold or mildew conditions that existed prior to the flood event are not covered  After a flood, the policy holder is responsible for taking reasonable and appropriate mitigation actions to reduce or  eliminate mold or mildew

 

 
Insurance Coverages

 

Flooding is not covered under typical Homeowners insurance policies.

It is one of the most common disasters that is not covered by the typical homeowners insurance policy. Since it's not covered by a standard homeowner's insurance policy,it has become a significant policy issue for the City of Houston.  

 

 

 

Fire Insurance
 

Fire damage costs will vary widely depending on the size of the fire, the value of property destroyed/damaged, and other factors. According to the  Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition , a fire could cost you more than  $45,000  if you don't have sprinklers, whereas a home equipped with sprinklers could average less than  $2,500  in damage.  Low-End Cost Estimate for Fire Restoration: $2000  or less  High-end cost estimate for Fire Restoration: $50,000 or more.  

If you have homeowner's or fire insurance, do not move or clean anything until the insurance investigator has had a chance to inspect and photograph the damage  Fire damage can affect all or part of a property. Fortunately, homeowners' insurance policies often cover damage from fire and smoke, including wildfires.
